Product search that understands how customers type: live suggestions, SKU and GTIN codes, typos, plurals and unfinished words.

== Description ==

Customers rarely type a product name the way your catalog spells it. They write plurals, leave a word unfinished, make a typo or paste a product code. Argot answers all of these from its own index, built for WooCommerce stores with thousands of products.

Argot was built for a real hardware store with more than 15,000 products, where it shows suggestions in a third to half a second after the customer stops typing.

**What Argot does**

* **Suggestions while typing:** product image, price and stock under the search box, and a "View all results" link with the real count.
* **Product codes:** SKU and GTIN/EAN (also of variations); an exact code comes first.
* **Typos:** "compresor" or "drils" still find compressors and drills.
* **Word forms:** plurals and endings in English and Romanian ("drills" finds "drill", "batteries" finds "battery"); other languages are matched as whole words.
* **Unfinished words:** "comp" already shows compressors, both in the box and after Enter.
* **Numbers and units:** "50l", "50 l" and "50 liters" are the same; "1,200 W" and "1200W" too.
* **Fallback steps:** when nothing matches, Argot joins split words, corrects typos and finally drops sizes, and tells the customer what it searched for.
* **Any theme:** it attaches to the WordPress and WooCommerce search boxes by itself; another selector can be set in the panel. With the Merto theme it fills the theme's own result box.
* **Results page too:** the shop's search results come from the same engine and in the same order.
* **Always current:** a saved product is re-indexed within five minutes, everything is rebuilt every night, and stock and prices are read live from WooCommerce.

**Argot Pro** (sold separately on [kalki.work](https://kalki.work/en/argot/)) adds an editable jargon dictionary with ready-made packs, attributes, brands and tags in the search, the main product before its parts and accessories, a log of searches without results and a faster suggestion endpoint. Argot works fully without it.

**For developers**

* `argot_dictionary_text` — return synonym rules (`jargon = term, term` or `term, term, term`, one per line).
* `argot_index_extra` — extra text to index for a product.
* `argot_is_part` — mark a product as a part or accessory (ranked after the main product).
* `argot_rank` — reorder results.
* `argot_search_done` — runs after each search on the results page.

== Installation ==

1. Install and activate Argot from Plugins → Add New.
2. Go to WooCommerce → Argot → Index and press "Rebuild the whole index" (about a minute per 5,000 products).
3. That is all: the search boxes of your shop now show suggestions, and the results page uses Argot.

== Frequently Asked Questions ==

= Does it slow down my site? =

No. The index is a separate table; searches read only that table and WooCommerce's product lookup table. Saving products only marks them for a rebuild, which runs in the background.

= Does it search in the long description? =

No. The long description is slow to search and brings many unrelated products. Argot searches the title, SKU, GTIN, short description and category names.

= My theme has its own live search. =

Argot switches off the Merto theme's live search by itself. For other themes, turn off the theme's own live search in the theme settings so the visitor does not see two lists.

= Does Argot send data anywhere? =

No. Argot works only with your own database. Argot Pro contacts kalki.work only to activate its licence and check for updates.
